Just A Stranger is Cash & Skye's debut album, seven years of teenage songwriting sessions finally condensed into a record that treats Americana and punk as the same basic instinct.
Henri Cash, founding guitarist of Starcrawler, and Sophia Skye, who grew up on tour buses with her father Pierre de Reeder of Rilo Kiley, started writing together as high school kids bonding over classic country and rock and roll, purely for the fun of it. That casual origin shows up as an asset rather than a limitation. Nothing here feels engineered for a specific lane, just two people with genuinely inherited musical instincts letting country storytelling collide with a rawer, punk-adjacent edge, first hinted at on their 2021 Third Man Records single before finally arriving as a full album in 2025.
Stranger opens the record establishing that tension immediately, twang and grit refusing to pick a side. Pasadena Girls carries the clearest narrative pull, genuine Los Angeles specificity grounding the song rather than letting it float into generic Americana signifiers. Hydroplaning leans into the record's rawest, most urgent stretch, and Closed pulls the emotional arc together near the album's end, unresolved in exactly the way its title suggests it shouldn't be.
Seven years of writing songs for no reason beyond loving the process. That patience is all over this record.
