That's The Spirit is the sound of Bring Me The Horizon trading breakdowns for anthems, and the gamble changed everything for the Sheffield band.

Released in 2015, the follow-up to Sempiternal pushed further from their metalcore roots towards widescreen alternative rock with electronic shading. Frontman Oli Sykes and keyboardist Jordan Fish, who joined in time for Sempiternal, produced it themselves, with sessions in Santorini, Newbury and Sheffield, and Sykes wrote frankly about depression and his own darker moments.

"Throne" is the arena-sized calling card, all pounding drums and a chorus made for shouting back, and "Drown" carries its soaring, wounded hook over from the standalone single that first hinted at the new direction. "Happy Song" twists a cheerleader chant into something defiant, while "True Friends" snarls at betrayal with venom to spare.

Fish's synths and programming give the record a sleek, polished sheen, but the guitars still bite, and the band never sounds like it is apologising for getting bigger. Sykes trades much of his old screaming for clean, melodic singing, which only makes the lyrics land harder.

It is the record that set up much of what they have done since, and on vinyl its huge, layered production has the space to hit properly.
