Body and Soul catches Billie Holiday late in her career, intimate and unhurried, presented here as part of the Verve Essential Vinyl Series.

Recorded over four January sessions in 1957 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood and produced by Norman Granz, the album places her voice, frayed by then but rich in feeling, inside a small group of West Coast heavyweights. Ben Webster's breathy tenor saxophone, Harry Edison's trumpet, Barney Kessel's guitar and Jimmy Rowles' piano surround her with sympathetic, conversational playing that never crowds the singer.

The title track opens the record at a slow burn, with Webster's sax curling around every line. They Can't Take That Away From Me and Let's Call the Whole Thing Off show her lighter, swinging side with a pair of Gershwin favourites, while Embraceable You stretches out into one of the album's most tender moments, her phrasing hanging just behind the beat.

Her singing here is about weight and timing rather than range, and that is exactly the appeal: a great interpreter making every word count. As an entry in the series, it offers an easy way into her Verve years, and it sits well beside Lady Sings the Blues, two late-period records made for quiet evenings and close listening.
