Few live jazz records carry the weight of Sunday at the Village Vanguard, the Bill Evans Trio's 1961 masterpiece, presented here on clear orange vinyl.

Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian spent a single Sunday at the New York club, playing afternoon and evening sets while producer Orrin Keepnews kept the tapes rolling. Less than two weeks later, LaFaro was killed in a car accident at just 25, and this album, built around his playing and his compositions, became a tribute as much as a document of a remarkable day.

The interplay is the whole point. LaFaro's Gloria's Step and Jade Visions let the bass sing rather than simply keep time, while Gershwin's My Man's Gone Now unfolds with haunting patience. Miles Davis' Solar crackles with conversational energy, and between phrases you can hear the clink of glasses and the murmur of the room, which only adds to the intimacy.

This is the sound of three musicians thinking as one, and it set the template for the modern piano trio. On clear orange vinyl, it makes a vivid companion to Waltz for Debby, drawn from the very same day, and an essential cornerstone for any serious jazz collection, from first-timers to lifelong devotees.
