Reissue. Remastered. Battleship Potemkin is Pet Shop Boys writing a genuine orchestral score for one of cinema's most influential works, spread across 2LP.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe premiered this alongside a screening of Eisenstein's 1925 silent film in Trafalgar Square in 2004, performing live with the Dresdner Sinfoniker under Jonathan Stockhammer's baton, and the pairing makes more sense than it first sounds. Eisenstein's editing was itself a kind of rhythm, montage built on tension and release, and Tennant and Lowe, always more interested in emotional architecture than obvious pop hooks, found real common ground scoring a film that has no dialogue to work around. Torsten Rasch's orchestrations give the electronic elements somewhere serious to sit, and the whole thing was released as a proper album the following year.
Odessa carries the weight of the film's most famous sequence, tension building with genuine orchestral heft rather than just synth pulse. After All (The Odessa Staircase) follows directly, the score's emotional peak matching one of silent cinema's most devastating scenes beat for beat. Comrades! opens the record establishing the political urgency the whole film runs on, and For Freedom closes things on the kind of swelling, cathartic resolution a revolutionary drama demands.
A pop duo taking a hundred-year-old silent film completely seriously, and finding they had exactly the right instincts for it.
