Architects took a sharp left turn on The Here and Now, their 2011 album, pressed here as a limited-edition picture disc.

Coming after the technical fury of Hollow Crown, the band wanted a record that captured the energy of their live shows, so they headed to California to work with producer Steve Evetts at The Omen Room. The result leaned toward melodic hardcore, trading some of the mathematical complexity for bigger choruses and far more clean singing from Sam Carter.

"Day In Day Out" bursts out with real urgency, and "Learn to Live" pairs a driving pulse with an arms-wide hook. Comeback Kid's Andrew Neufeld joins on "Stay Young Forever", and The Dillinger Escape Plan's Greg Puciato brings his unhinged intensity to the closing "Year In Year Out / Up and Away", which hides an extra song after a stretch of silence.

The album divided fans on release, and the band themselves later kept their distance from it, which only makes it a more intriguing outlier in their catalogue. Heard now, its mix of hardcore grit and open-hearted melody sounds bolder than its reputation suggests.

The picture disc format suits a record this distinctive, and it fills an important gap for anyone collecting the band's earlier years on vinyl.
