Insurrection [2LP] Vinyl
Only 6 left in stock.
Insurrection is a lost Alan Vega album, eleven tracks pulled out of the vault nearly thirty years after he recorded them, and it lands like a transmission arriving right on time.
Vega co-founded Suicide with Martin Rev in 1970, and their 1977 debut rewired what two people and a cheap keyboard could do to an audience. His solo work was always the audio half of a practice that included visual art, and by the late 1980s he was deep into experimentation alongside Liz Lamere, the collaborator who stayed with him until his death in 2016. These recordings date to 1997 and 1998, cut between Mutator and 2007, when Vega was processing a New York full of violence and moral rot, still carrying post Gulf War dread, and bracing for a terror attack on American soil he sensed coming years before it did. Lamere and Jared Artaud unearthed the tapes and co-produced the result.
Sewer opens with the record at its most abrasive, all corroded electronics and Vega snarling through the murk. Invasion and Genocide hit like bulletins from a city coming apart, Cyanide Soul stretches past six minutes of pure hypnotic dread, and Mercy is where the light gets in, the hope Vega never fully abandoned.
Vega spent decades recording far more than he released. The vault, it turns out, was worth opening.
