The Virgin Suicides Redux revisits Air's second album, the score they wrote for Sofia Coppola's directorial debut, now remixed entirely in the analog domain and cut half-speed for its 25th anniversary.

Coppola had been listening to Air while writing the screenplay, and the fit turned out to be exactly right, the duo's hazy, melancholic electronics matching a film about suburban teenage girls slipping further out of reach from everyone around them. Rather than treat it as a standard soundtrack assignment, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel built a genuine album, one that arrived separately from the film's own compilation of period songs and stood entirely on its own terms, nominated for a Brit Award and only growing in reputation as the film itself became a cult touchstone. This redux doesn't touch the compositions, it deepens the mix itself, giving those soundscapes room they didn't fully have on the original pressing.

Playground Love remains the record's defining moment, that woozy saxophone line carrying real ache underneath its dreamy surface. Highschool Lover drifts with genuine tenderness, and Suicide Underground closes the album on its darkest, most unresolved note, exactly the tone the film's ending demands.

Twenty-five years on, still one of the great marriages of score and story. This new mix finally lets the haze breathe properly.
