Homeworld (Original Soundtrack) is the score that made deep space feel genuinely lonely for a generation of PC gamers, thirty-seven tracks pulled from a shoe box of DAT tapes and finally pressed across 2LP.
Paul Ruskay was handed near-total freedom scoring Relic's 1999 space strategy epic, and rather than lean on orchestral bombast, he built the whole thing from a deliberately limited setup, synthesizer, sampler, and sequencer, while his actual studio was still being constructed around him. That constraint forced instinctive, live-mixed compositions rather than layered perfection, and the result drew from Vangelis' Blade Runner, Brian Eno's ambient patience, Delirium's electronica, and Cheb i Sabbah's global sampling technique, a combination nobody else scoring games at the time was attempting. For this restoration, Ruskay dug the original tapes out himself and widened the mixes with subtle, faithful additions rather than reinventing anything.
The Guidestone opens the record on exactly the vast, unhurried scale that defined the whole game. Imperial Battle appears in both its original and remixed forms, letting listeners hear the restoration's care directly against the source. The Bentusi Under Attack carries real tension without resorting to obvious action-scoring tropes, and Hyperspace closes disc two on the score's most disorienting, atmospheric note.
A quarter century on, this is still the sound of feeling genuinely small in an enormous universe. Few game scores have aged this well.
