Storm Windows is a smooth, soulful detour in Prine’s catalog – an album that leans into polished production without ever losing his signature grit or storytelling brilliance. Released in 1980 and produced by the legendary Barry Beckett (of Muscle Shoals fame), Storm Windows is a lush, late-night kind of record, full of rich arrangements and emotional nuance.
The title track “Storm Windows” is pure Prine magic – wistful, bittersweet, and beautifully melodic. It paints a portrait of small-town melancholy with the kind of lyrical detail only Prine could deliver. “Living in the Future” kicks off the album with a burst of energy and wit, while “Sleepy Eyed Boy” and “All Night Blue” showcase his more romantic, introspective side.
There’s a definite Nashville-meets-Muscle-Shoals vibe here, with layered instrumentation, backing vocals, and a smoother finish than his earlier, rawer folk records. But don’t be fooled – underneath that sheen, Prine’s pen is still razor-sharp, and his voice carries every ounce of heart, humor, and humanity.
