Back in 1976, ZZ Top's World Wide Texas Tour began as a promotional sampler for the band's most outrageous road show, and it now arrives as a 140-gram LP.
That tour became the stuff of legend, hauling a Texas-shaped stage and a small menagerie of livestock around the globe. To promote it, this record packed a dozen songs from the trio's first four albums onto one disc, a crash course in the boogie, blues and barbed humour that made Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard that little ol' band from Texas. As a running order, it plays like a greatest hits set before anyone thought to make one.
Waitin' for the Bus slides straight into Jesus Just Left Chicago, just as the pair do on Tres Hombres, and Tush delivers that unmistakable strut with Dusty Hill out front. Other picks dig back to the earliest records for something grittier, and a tribute to the border radio stations that shaped the band turns up too. Then La Grange closes it all out, with Gibbons' stinging guitar riding that famous boogie all the way home.
Twelve songs, no filler and a whole lot of Texas swagger. It makes the case for early ZZ Top as well as any single record can.
