Zé Ibarra steps into the spotlight with Afim, his second solo album, a bold and cinematic set from one of the most exciting new voices in Brazilian music.

You may know that hypnotic voice from Bala Desejo or Dônica, or from touring on guitar and vocals with Milton Nascimento. Released in 2025, Afim gathers eight tracks of Ibarra's own songs and covers by friends and contemporaries, blending MPB, jazz, pop and progressive rock with real authority, from stripped-back guitar intimacy to dense arrangements with sweeping strings.

Transe, the single, has an instantly comforting tone reminiscent of classic Brazilian songs, built on rhythmic guitar and mysterious strings arranged by Jaques Morelenbaum. His take on Sophia Chablau's Segredo turns a punky-indie original into something wholly his own, while Essa Confusão, co-written with Dora Morelenbaum, swells into epic 1970s singer-songwriter territory.

Co-produced by Lucas Nunes and recorded with a core band of long-time musical partners, the album feels archetypal without slipping into retro mode.

Dark, cinematic and warm all at once, Afim is a gorgeous introduction for newcomers to the new Brazilian scene and a rewarding listen for longtime MPB fans. Put it on, close your eyes and let those strings carry you somewhere a little sunnier.
