Yo-Yo Ma's Simply Baroque returns as a limited two-LP set on 180-gram aqua vinyl, imported from Holland, gathering the cellist's graceful 1999 turn toward period performance.
For this project Ma teamed up with conductor and keyboard player Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, fitting his cello with gut strings to blend with the lighter, more transparent sound of baroque instruments. The result is music that rewards close listening but never feels like homework, intimate and warm from the first bar.
The first half leans on Bach, with arrangements of arias and chorale melodies that let the cello sing like a human voice. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring flows with gentle warmth, Erbarme Dich carries all the ache of the St Matthew Passion, and the famous Air from the third Orchestral Suite unfolds with unhurried calm.
Two cello concertos by Luigi Boccherini, in G major and D major, then show off Ma's agility, with lively outer movements framing tender, songful slow ones. Ma's tone is lighter and leaner than on his modern-instrument recordings, which suits the music beautifully.
Elegant and endlessly replayable, it is a gorgeous entry point to baroque music and a lovely companion for slow Sunday mornings. The aqua vinyl only adds to the sense of calm.
