Hoboken trio Yo La Tengo made their masterpiece in 1997, and I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One still sounds like a record collection come to life, spread here across two LPs.
By the late 1990s, Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew had spent years absorbing everything from garage rock to bossa nova to drone, and this is where all of it clicked into one restless, affectionate whole. Working with producer Roger Moutenot, the band made an album that drifts between gentle and ferocious without ever feeling like a stunt.
"Autumn Sweater" is the quiet heart of it, a shy, hushed organ song about nerves and longing that has become one of indie rock's great slow dances. "Sugarcube" counters with bright, fuzzy pop, while "Stockholm Syndrome" gives McNew a tender lead vocal and a gorgeous, unhurried melody. Then there are the covers, including a sun-dappled take on "My Little Corner of the World" sung by Hubley, and the Beach Boys' "Little Honda" cranked into a feedback rave-up. Elsewhere, long instrumental passages let the trio simply listen to each other.
It is the kind of album that rewards decades of returning to it, with something new peeking out each time. For anyone building a serious indie shelf, it belongs near the front.
