Yes reached for an orchestra on Magnification, and this 25th Anniversary Edition presents it as a half-speed mastered 180-gram double LP in a gatefold sleeve.

Released in 2001, the album was the band's first as a four-piece, with Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe and Alan White carrying on without a keyboard player. Rather than hire one, they turned to composer Larry Groupé, whose orchestral arrangements fill the space synthesizers would usually occupy. It was the first time Yes had worked with an orchestra since Time and a Word in 1970, and it turned out to be Anderson's final studio album with the group.

The title track opens with sweeping strings and Anderson's high, clear voice, setting a grand, cinematic tone. Don't Go is a brighter, more compact pop moment, while Can You Imagine hands the lead vocal to Squire, his voice rich against Howe's ringing guitars. The centrepiece is In the Presence Of, a multi-part suite that builds patiently from quiet reflection to full orchestral release.

Often overlooked in the Yes catalogue, Magnification has a warmth and ambition that reward a fresh listen. Spread across four sides, its long-form pieces can unfold at their own pace, and a quarter-century on, its anniversary is the perfect moment to rediscover it.
