Yellowcard's Ocean Avenue bottled the bittersweet rush of summer slipping away, and it still sounds like the last night before everyone leaves town.

Released in 2003, the album was the Jacksonville-born band's major-label breakthrough on Capitol, and it pushed pop-punk somewhere new thanks to one secret weapon: Sean Mackin's violin. Where most of their peers stuck to guitars and gang vocals, Yellowcard let strings soar over the crunch, giving their songs an extra lift of melody and longing.

The title track is the obvious anthem, all racing drums and wide-eyed nostalgia, while Only One slows things into a bruised breakup ballad that hit a nerve with a generation of heartbroken teenagers. Way Away kicks the doors open with urgency, and Empty Apartment captures the hollow quiet that settles in when it all falls apart.

Ryan Key's earnest vocals sit right at the centre of it all, singing about home, distance and growing up with the kind of sincerity that made the record a soundtrack for countless summer road trips and late-night drives.

More than two decades on, Ocean Avenue remains one of the defining records of the pop-punk boom, and on vinyl it feels like opening an old yearbook and finding every page still there.
