Xiu Xiu step into David Lynch's industrial nightmare with Eraserhead Xiu Xiu, pressed on clear vinyl and packaged with a book and a digital download card.
This is not the band's first trip into Lynch's world. A decade ago they reimagined the music of Twin Peaks, but this project goes deeper and stranger, taking on the 1977 film that started it all. Conceived as a live concert, an accompanying film and a full-length album at once, it was played and recorded by Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo in Berlin, using Alan Splet's legendary score and sound design as a map rather than a script.
The palette is gloriously odd: field recordings, homemade instruments, organ, modular synths, flashlights and crackling electrical interference, all bent into musique concrète. "Sleep Synth" and "Tetra" creep from near silence into harsh, overwhelming noise, conjuring the hiss and hum of the film's bleak factory district. Then comes "In Heaven," Peter Ivers' eerie little lullaby from the film, sung softly by Stewart, a moment of fragile beauty after so much dread.
It is challenging, immersive and occasionally beautiful, which is exactly what fans of both Xiu Xiu and Lynch would hope for. Turn the lights down and let the radiator sing.
