Wunderhorse plug straight into the amps on Midas, the 2024 second album that showed how much louder and looser Jacob Slater's band could get.
Following Cub, their 2022 debut, and support slots with Fontaines D.C., Pixies and Foals, the band headed to Pachyderm Studios in Minnesota to work with producer Craig Silvey, and the record has the immediacy of four musicians playing together in a room. Slater, formerly the frontman of punk trio Dead Pretties, had grown Wunderhorse from a pandemic-era solo project into a road-hardened group alongside guitarist Harry Fowler, drummer Jamie Staples and bassist Peter Woodin, and that chemistry is all over these songs.
The title track kicks the door in with snarling, grunge-tinged guitars, and Silver, Rain and July, all released ahead of the album, balance ragged energy with real melodic warmth. Slater's voice moves from a weary croon to a full-throated roar, and the arrangements leave room for feedback, space and a little danger, recalling the restless guitar records of the nineties without ever feeling like a tribute act.
Midas has the urgency of a band that knows its moment has arrived, and the confidence to let its songs breathe. Play it loud, preferably with the windows wide open and nowhere to be.
