Wolf Alice made one of the most assured British debuts of the decade with My Love Is Cool, presented here as a UK import LP.
Released in 2015 and produced by Mike Crossey, the album took the London band's scrappy early EPs and widened the frame. Ellie Rowsell's voice can whisper, sneer and roar within a single song, and the band follow her every turn, sliding between grunge, shoegaze, dream pop and folk without ever sounding like they're trying on costumes. It reached number two in the UK and earned a Mercury Prize nomination, a remarkable start for a first full-length.
"Bros" is the warm-hearted centrepiece, a shimmering ode to friendship that still sounds like the first day of summer. "You're a Germ" flips the switch to snarling, punky fury, while "Giant Peach" barrels along on a wiry, menacing riff before exploding into a gloriously loud finale. "Silk", later featured in T2 Trainspotting, slows everything to a hazy, hypnotic crawl.
Listening now, it's clear the ambition that would carry them to much bigger stages was there from the very first record. My Love Is Cool remains a thrilling snapshot of a young band discovering just how much they could do, and it still rewards turning the volume all the way up.
