Willie Nelson's Stardust took an outlaw country star at the height of his fame and pointed him straight at the Great American Songbook, pressed here on 140-gram vinyl.

In 1978, with Red Headed Stranger and the outlaw movement having made him one of the biggest names in country music, Nelson chose to record ten pop standards he had loved for years. The idea raised eyebrows at his label. Booker T. Jones produced and arranged the sessions and played keyboards, and the pairing proved inspired. Stardust became one of the most beloved and best-selling records of Nelson's long career, and it introduced these songs to a whole new generation of listeners.

What makes it work is restraint. The title track opens with a hush, Nelson's conversational phrasing floating over gentle organ and the worn nylon-string guitar he calls Trigger. Georgia on My Mind is unhurried and aching, Blue Skies rolls along with relaxed, front-porch ease, and Someone to Watch Over Me closes the album with quiet tenderness. Mickey Raphael's harmonica threads through it all like a second voice.

Decades on, it still sounds like a man singing the songs he loves to people he trusts. Country fans and standards devotees have been meeting in the middle on this record ever since, and it remains an easy place to start with Willie.
