Seven decades into his recording career, Willie Nelson sounds relaxed and in full command on Dream Chaser, his 79th solo studio album, released in 2026.

It is another collaboration with producer and co-writer Buddy Cannon, a partnership that has yielded close to 20 albums in 13 years and shows no sign of slowing. The pair wrote six of these songs together, three of them with Nashville writer Bobby Tomberlin, and one began life as an idea from Bob Dylan before Nelson and Cannon shaped it into its final form.

That song, I Can't Read Your Mind, is a quiet highlight on a record full of reflective, road-worn storytelling. The title track, the album's first single, opens proceedings, while Love Overdue was co-written by Mickey Raphael, the harmonica player who has been at Nelson's side for decades. Developing My Pictures, an Earl Montgomery song, closes the album.

Raphael's harmonica and Tommy White's steel guitar weave through the arrangements, while Michael Rojas adds Hammond organ and piano, keeping everything warm and unhurried. Nelson's phrasing is as conversational and behind-the-beat as ever, and the whole thing plays like an evening on the porch with an old friend who still has plenty to say and knows exactly how to say it.
