William Basinski steps away from his famous tape loops and sits at the piano for Passing the Cup of Sorrows, a single continuous piece spread across both sides of this LP.
The Los Angeles-based composer, best known for The Disintegration Loops, recorded the album in 2026 at Arcadia West in Los Angeles, his first solo work since Lamentations in 2020. Its title comes from a concept in past-life regression therapy, in which two souls who hurt each other in an earlier life meet in the spirit world to reconcile, an exchange of energy that allows understanding and forgiveness to flow.
That idea of slow, patient forgiveness shapes the music. The title piece unfolds as one long meditation for solo piano, its phrases drifting, repeating and dissolving, with subtle electronic textures shimmering at the edges like heat haze. Nothing is rushed, and the music rewards listening that is just as unhurried.
Fans of his earlier work will recognize the hallmarks, the gentle insistence of repetition and the sense of time stretching out, but the piano gives this music a new warmth and intimacy, as though the decay of his tapes has been replaced with something more human.
It is music for late evenings and quiet rooms, best heard from start to finish with the lights low.
