Wild Rivers' Eighty-Eight is the EP that helped the Toronto band find a wider audience, and this edition presses it on Laguna Blue vinyl.
The group began at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, as a duo of Khalid Yassein and Devan Glover, later growing into a four-piece with Andrew Oliver and Ben Labenski. Originally released in 2018, Eighty-Eight was written and recorded between Ontario and Nashville, and that same year the band opened shows for The Paper Kites and Donovan Woods. They describe their own style as folk 'n' roll and country soul, which sums it up neatly.
"A Week Ago" glides in on a sun-warmed, Hawaiian-style slide guitar, and the single "Howling" pairs an acoustic strum with a soulful, singalong melody. "Call It A Night" slows right down, letting Yassein and Glover trade verses before their voices meet in the chorus, while "I Won't Be Back" leans toward country-folk with a chant-along hook.
This vinyl edition rounds things out with "Do Right" and "Moving Target," stretching the original five-song set to seven.
For fans of Fleetwood Mac harmonies, James Taylor's easy warmth or the gentler side of Neil Young, it's a lovely, low-key listen that wears its heart openly and rewards a quiet evening.
