Wild Rivers follow their 2024 album Never Better with Better Now, a companion record pressed on clear vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
The Toronto trio of Devan Glover, Khalid Yassein and Andrew Oliver wrote both albums at the same time, describing them as musical twins. Where the first was bright and bold, this set is the afterglow, a more sombre look at changing relationships, unresolved feelings and the darker corners of life in your twenties.
Co-produced by the band and Gabe Wax, the songs were made in makeshift studios between Joshua Tree and Los Angeles, with the aim of keeping things immediate and alive. That approach shows in the unvarnished feel of "What Kind of Song" and the gentle sway of "Settle Down."
Glover and Yassein's intertwined harmonies remain the band's signature, and they carry "I Will If You Will" and closer "Still the One" with real tenderness. Across eight songs and under half an hour, there's no wasted motion, just carefully chosen words and melodies that linger.
Hopeful even at its most melancholy, Better Now makes a lovely companion piece for anyone who has ever needed a soundtrack for the turbulence of their twenties. Play it straight after Never Better and the two records feel like one long conversation.
