Widowspeak have always made patience sound seductive, and Plum, their fifth album from 2020, might be the most quietly absorbing record they've made.
Singer Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas recorded it in New York's Catskill Mountains over the winter of 2019, with Thomas producing and a small circle of collaborators including Sam Owens on bass and synth. Released on Captured Tracks, it arrived in a strange, unsettled year, and song titles like "Money" and "Breadwinner" hint at the questions of work, worth and getting by that run through it.
The title track opens with a slow, golden shimmer and sets the tone for everything after. "Breadwinner" and "Money" turn everyday anxieties into hazy, hypnotic slow-burners, and "Even True Love" keeps the spell going with a softly insistent melody.
Thomas's guitars ripple and chime rather than crash, drifting through reverb alongside gentle drums and synths, and Hamilton's voice floats above it all, warm, unhurried and quietly wise. The whole thing has the feel of a long winter afternoon, still and reflective.
For fans of Mazzy Star, Cowboy Junkies or late-evening dream pop, Plum is a beautifully understated listen, the kind of record that reveals a little more each time the needle drops.
