Widespread Panic's Live From Austin, TX captures the Athens jam veterans on the Austin City Limits stage in 2000, pressed on two 180-gram LPs.
Recorded for the long-running television series, the set is a snapshot of the band's classic lineup: John Bell, Michael Houser, Dave Schools, John Hermann, Todd Nance and Domingo Ortiz. It is also a precious document of Houser, whose fluid, unhurried lead guitar was central to the band's sound before his death in 2002. Rather than sprawling across hours, the performance is a tight, focused distillation of everything that made Panic such a formidable touring force.
They open with Vic Chesnutt's "Let's Get Down to Business" before settling into fan favourites like "Ain't Life Grand." A loping cover of J.J. Cale's "Travelin' Light" shows off their Southern roots, extended jams stretch out in true Panic fashion, and "Porch Song" closes the night with the kind of joyous, rolling groove that kept fans following them from town to town for years.
Longtime fans get a cherished window into a beloved era, and newcomers get an ideal introduction to the band's chemistry, compact enough to play in one sitting. Heavy vinyl gives those guitars and that swampy rhythm section plenty of satisfying weight.
