Whitey Morgan & The 78's [Blue & Bone] Vinyl
Only 19 left in stock.
Whitey Morgan and the 78's is where outlaw country got resuscitated by a guy from Flint, Michigan who meant every word of it, now on blue and bone vinyl.
Nashville in 2010 wanted very little to do with this record, which is exactly the point. Morgan built his sound on Waylon Jennings and Johnny Paycheck rather than anything on country radio at the time, and rather than chase a trend he took his band to Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock and cut it live, no polish, pedal steel and telecaster doing the talking. It debuted on the Billboard country chart anyway, proof there was an audience starving for exactly this.
Turn Up the Bottle is the song that built his reputation, a genuinely great drinking anthem delivered without a wink. Their cover of Johnny Paycheck's Meanest Jukebox in Town sounds like it was written for Morgan's voice specifically, Buick City carries the weight of his hometown's decline without ever turning maudlin, and Bad News opens the record setting the tone, weathered and unhurried.
Nine tracks cut live in Levon Helm's barn, and not a single one of them sounds like it was made for radio. That was always the whole point.
