Pipe Dreams Redux revisits Whirr's 2012 shoegaze debut in its reworked form, pressed here on pink and blue marble vinyl.
The California band's first album originally appeared on Tee Pee Records, built from walls of guitar, drowsy vocals and a heavy, almost narcotic sense of melody. In 2014 original engineer Jack Shirley remixed and remastered the record, the songs were resequenced and the album was given new artwork, and that Redux version is the one presented here. Alexandra Morte and Loren Rivera share vocal duties, their voices half-buried in the haze.
"Reverse" opens with a slow-motion swell of distortion, and "Home Is Where My Head Is" follows with a hazy, hooky lift. "Junebouvier" glides on chiming, reverb-soaked chords, while "Formulas and Frequencies" stretches out to nearly six minutes, letting the feedback bloom into something vast and immersive.
Whirr's sound owes plenty to the genre's early-1990s greats, but the band push the volume and the weight further, landing somewhere between dream pop and something much heavier. The ten songs flow together like one long, slow exhale, each fading into the next.
For lovers of loud, blissed-out guitar music, it is a record that rewards high volume and a dark room, and the marbled pressing looks as dreamy as it sounds.
