Pressed on honeydew melon colored vinyl, Notes from a Quiet Life finds Washed Out's Ernest Greene taking full control of production on an album for the first time.
Greene helped define chillwave more than a decade earlier with hazy, sun-faded bedroom recordings, and this fifth album arrived on Sub Pop in 2024, four years after Purple Noon. Handling every production decision himself, he nudged the project away from pure chillwave toward a crisper, more song-focused sound, while keeping the warmth and soft edges his fans love.
Opener "Waking Up" eases in gently and sets an unhurried, sunlit mood. "Say Goodbye" and "Got Your Back" pulse with warm, rolling grooves built for the open road, and "Running Away" keeps that easy momentum rolling once the record turns over to its second side. Throughout, Greene's softly layered vocals float above synths, drum machines and shimmering texture, never in a rush.
True to its title, the album moves at its own pace, inviting listeners to slow down and let the details reveal themselves over repeated plays, ideally with the windows open and nowhere in particular to be.
For anyone who has ever soundtracked a late summer evening with Washed Out, this honeydew melon pressing makes a fitting companion.
