Before the acclaimed albums and festival stages, Warpaint introduced themselves with Exquisite Corpse, a hazy six-song EP that already sounded like nothing else in Los Angeles.
First released by the band themselves in 2008, it caught the group still finding their shape, with Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman and Jenny Lee Lindberg joined behind the kit by Shannyn Sossamon. Jacob Bercovici produced, and the mix came courtesy of John Frusciante, then of Red Hot Chili Peppers, who also slipped some mellotron onto one track. Future Chili Pepper Josh Klinghoffer sat in on drums and guitar.
The songs take their time. "Stars" drifts in on woozy, interlocking guitars and layered harmonies, "Elephants" builds from a nervy pulse into something wiry and urgent, and "Billie Holiday" folds a fragment of Smokey Robinson's "My Guy" into its dreamy sway. "Beetles" stretches toward seven minutes of slow-motion tension.
Everything here points to the sound that would define their later records, the spacious bass lines, ghostly vocals and guitars that circle each other rather than collide, long before the rest of the world caught on.
For fans who came in with The Fool, it's a fascinating first chapter, and a gorgeous late-night listen in its own right, best heard with the lights down low.
