Two violins, a viola and a cello take on the moody glamour of The Weeknd on VSQ Performs The Weeknd, a vinyl-only collection of fourteen string quartet covers.
Vitamin String Quartet have been reimagining rock and pop hits since forming in Los Angeles in 1999, and their arrangements have become a screen favourite, most famously in Netflix's Bridgerton. This set gathers the quartet's two volumes of Weeknd covers onto a single record, spanning more than a decade of hits from the Toronto star's catalogue, from his early cult classics to his biggest chart smashes.
Stripped of vocals and drum machines, the melodies step forward in surprising ways. "Blinding Lights" holds on to its restless, after-dark energy, "Earned It" leans naturally into lush, slow-dance romance, and "Save Your Tears" reveals the bittersweet tune hiding under the original's gloss. Older favourites such as "Wicked Games" sit comfortably beside the recent hits, showing how consistent his gift for a brooding hook has been.
It works beautifully as elegant background music for a dinner party, and just as well as a fresh way to hear songs you already know by heart. Fans of The Weeknd will enjoy spotting the hooks, and anyone who loves chamber-pop crossovers will find plenty here to admire on repeat listens.
