Vince Staples goes home again on Ramona Park Broke My Heart, a 2022 love letter to North Long Beach that is equal parts nostalgia and grief.
Named for the neighbourhood he grew up in, the album arrived a year after his self-titled record and widened the lens on the same streets. Where that album was terse and inward, this one is fuller and more generous, spinning stories of friends lost, loyalties tested and the strange ache of loving a place that hurt you. As ever, Staples delivers it all with a deadpan wit that makes the heavy moments land harder.
"Magic," produced by Mustard, rides a bright, bouncing West Coast beat that hides darker lines underneath. "When Sparks Fly" is one of his most striking moments, a tender, slow-burning love song with a twist that reveals its real subject. "Rose Street" drifts on a smooth, soulful groove, and "Lemonade" brings a sunny, summertime feel that belies its edge.
It is Staples at his most open-hearted and his most cinematic, a portrait of a place drawn with clear eyes and real affection. Few rappers make homesickness sound this complicated, or this good, and on vinyl it plays like the short film it always wanted to be.
