Veruca Salt went big on Eight Arms to Hold You, their 1997 second album, trading the scrappy charm of their debut for towering, glossy alt-rock firepower.
The Chicago band had broken out with their 1994 debut American Thighs, and for the follow-up Nina Gordon and Louise Post teamed up with producer Bob Rock, the man behind Metallica's Black Album. The title nods to the Beatles, borrowing the working title of Help!, and the ambition on display matched the reference.
Lead single "Volcano Girls" is the band at their most gleefully self-mythologizing, a crunchy, shout-along blast of attitude. "Straight" opens the record with heavy swagger, "Shutterbug" snaps with sharp-edged hooks, and "Benjamin" shows off the twin-vocal chemistry that made Gordon and Post such a formidable pair at the front of the stage.
It's a louder, sharper and more polished record than its predecessor, packed with big guitars and even bigger choruses, and it sits proudly among the defining alt-rock records of the late nineties. Bob Rock's muscular production gives every riff extra heft without sanding off the band's bite.
Gordon left soon after, making this the last word from the original lineup for many years, and a fan favorite well worth turning up loud all over again.
