Veruca Salt's American Thighs crashed out of Chicago in 1994 with fuzz, harmonies and a hit that refused to leave alternative radio. This pressing puts the debut on 180 gram vinyl.
Fronted by the twin songwriting forces of Nina Gordon and Louise Post, the band paired candy-sweet vocal blends with grungy, gnarled guitars at the height of the alternative boom. The album, named for a line in AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long," first appeared on the Chicago indie Minty Fresh before a major-label release carried it to a much bigger audience. Producer Brad Wood, who had also worked with Liz Phair, captured the band's raw energy without sanding down any of the edges.
"Seether" is the obvious calling card, a stop-start rush of a single whose chorus still sticks after one listen. "Number One Blind" pairs a brooding verse with a cathartic, soaring hook, and "Victrola" rounds out the trio of singles with plenty of muscle. Deeper in, the interplay between Gordon and Post keeps shifting between sweetness and snarl, often within the same song.
Three decades on, American Thighs remains a defining snapshot of '90s guitar rock, sharp-tongued and sugar-coated in equal measure. It's a record built to be played loud, preferably with the windows down and the volume well past sensible.
