Studio One Soul 2 returns on yellow double vinyl, following Jamaica's love affair with American soul and funk through the studio that Clement Coxsone Dodd built.
Soul Jazz first compiled this second volume in 2006, digging deeper into the Studio One vaults for reggae covers of soul favorites alongside rarities and previously unreleased cuts. Artists such as Horace Andy, The Heptones, Ken Boothe, Cornell Campbell and Jackie Mittoo reshape songs by the likes of Curtis Mayfield and Bill Withers, bending them to a Kingston groove without losing an ounce of feeling.
Horace Andy's Ain't No Sunshine is an obvious highlight, his quavering high voice turning Bill Withers' lament into something even more fragile. Hortense Ellis brings warmth to People Make The World Go Round, The Heptones give Curtis Mayfield's Choice Of Colours a gentle, conscious sway, and Jackie Mittoo's organ keeps popping up to remind everyone who held the Studio One sound together.
Deejays Prince Jazzbo and Little Joe also toast over these rhythms, adding a dose of swagger to all that sweetness. Eighteen tracks deep, it is an easy record to put on and a hard one to take off, proof that soul music traveled south and came back carrying a heavier bassline.
