Studio One Power Mix turns the spotlight on a sometimes overlooked chapter of Clement Coxsone Dodd's famous label, collecting late 1970s and 1980s cuts across two LPs.
By then Studio One had already shaped ska, rocksteady, roots, deejay music and dub. As dancehall began to rise, Dodd kept the label moving, cutting fresh records with a new generation of singers while bringing veterans such as Alton Ellis and Jackie Mittoo back into the studio. Released by Soul Jazz in 2024, this set gathers eighteen tracks from that period, from sweet lovers tunes to tough, rootsy deejay cuts.
Otis Gayle opens with What You Won't Do For Love, a silky reggae reading of the soul ballad, before Earl Sixteen's Love Is A Feeling keeps the romance flowing. Alton Ellis turns his gaze homeward on Back To Africa, Prince Jazzbo rides the rhythm with Apollo 16, and Jackie Mittoo stretches Lovers Rock past seven minutes of rolling keys and bass.
Sugar Minott, Wailing Souls, Johnny Osbourne, Freddie McGregor and Tyrone Taylor fill out a lineup stacked with dancehall-era voices. For anyone who knows Studio One mainly through its 1960s classics, this is a rewarding next step, with heavyweight bass that sounds made for a proper sound system.
