Rastafari: The Dreads Enter Babylon 1955-83 traces how a faith born in 1930s Jamaica found its voice on record, gathered by Soul Jazz across two blue vinyl LPs.
The story runs from early calypso and R&B salutes to Ethiopia through to the roots reggae that carried Rastafari around the world. At its heart is Count Ossie, whose nyabinghi drumming brought Rasta rhythms into popular music, and whose later work with the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari fused those drums with spiritual jazz in the early 1970s.
Count Ossie and the Rasta Family open with the chanting call of Africa We Want Fe Go, before Johnny Clarke's None Shall Escape The Judgement shifts into rolling 1970s roots. Laurel Aitken's Haile Selassie offers an early tribute to the emperor, and Tales of Mozambique stretches out into hypnotic drum patterns and horns. Elsewhere, Mutabaruka's dub poetry, Hugh Mundell's One Jah, One Aim, One Destiny and Lord Lebby's calypso Ethiopia widen the frame considerably.
Spanning nearly three decades, the set plays as both a deep listen and a crash course in where reggae's spiritual heart comes from. It sits naturally beside Soul Jazz's other Jamaican collections, and it rewards anyone curious about the drums, chants and convictions that run underneath so much of the island's music.
