Soul Jazz's Punk 45: There Is No Such Thing As Society gathers the scrappy, furious, brilliantly homemade sound of UK punk and post-punk singles from 1977 to 1981, here on blue double vinyl.
First compiled in 2014, the collection returns with five additional tracks added to the original selection. The theme is the explosion of DIY records that followed punk's first wave, as small bands across Britain pressed their own seven-inches and set up their own labels during the Thatcher years. Many of these songs barely left their hometowns when they were new, which is exactly what makes them so thrilling now.
The Users open with Sick of You, two minutes of pure sneer, and Johnny Moped's Incendiary Device follows in a blur of glorious chaos. Notsensibles deliver the deadpan comedy of I'm In Love With Margaret Thatcher, The Mekons bring the jagged art-school energy of 32 Weeks, and Josef K close the set with the wiry, nervy post-punk of Radio Drill Time, pointing toward everything that came next.
Alongside them sit cult favorites and true obscurities from The Cravats, The Freeze and 'O' Level, each one a snapshot of a band with something to say and a cheap studio booked to say it. It is a vivid, noisy history lesson that never once feels like homework.
