The soundtrack to Practical Magic, the 1998 film that cast Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witch sisters, arrives on limited yellow vinyl.
Few soundtracks of the era captured a film's mood so neatly. The movie mixes small-town romance, family curses and kitchen-table spellcraft, and the album follows suit, pairing fresh late-90s pop with a handful of classic songs from the 1970s, then closing on Alan Silvestri's own score themes. It plays like a mixtape made by a very cool aunt.
Stevie Nicks sets the tone with "If You Ever Did Believe," a song that sounds as if it was always meant to drift through the Owens house. Faith Hill's "This Kiss" brings bright country-pop sparkle, Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" adds heartbreak in its purest form, and Harry Nilsson's "Coconut" soundtracks the film's famous midnight margaritas scene with pure mischief. Marvin Gaye and Nick Drake turn up too, a pairing only a movie this witchy could pull off.
Silvestri's title theme and its companion cue bring things to a close with a touch of orchestral enchantment. It is a sweet, slightly spooky record that suits autumn evenings, a candle or two, and anyone who has quoted this film more often than they would care to admit.
