Few writers know 1976 better than Jon Savage, and Something Was Going To Happen tells its story one single at a time, on 180-gram double vinyl imported from the UK.

The author of England's Dreaming approaches the year as a listener first. His view is that 1976's biggest sellers were mostly a letdown, and that the arrival of the Ramones in April split the year in two. Around that he hears dub reggae drifting through London, disco on the radio and oddballs pointing somewhere new. Most of these are records he was listening to at the time, sequenced roughly in order of UK release.

The result is a glorious collision of worlds. Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" sits near Roxy Music and Burning Spear, while Junior Murvin's "Police And Thieves" carries the heavy weight of Jamaican roots. Blue Öyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" rubs shoulders with Hot Blood and Lewis Furey, and by the closing stretch The Damned's "New Rose," The Saints, Pere Ubu and Buzzcocks are kicking the door down.

It plays like a year of radio, record shops and late nights compressed into four sides.

For anyone who thinks punk arrived out of nowhere, this set makes a sharp, enjoyable case that the ground had been shifting all year.
