Thirty-six artists line up to honour one of Ireland's finest songwriters on 20th Century Paddy: The Songs of Shane MacGowan, a 3LP tribute to the late Pogues frontman.

MacGowan died in 2023, leaving behind a songbook that ran from snarling London-Irish punk to some of the most poetic ballads of loss, longing and late nights ever written. This collection covers the full sweep, from his early Pogues days to his later, more literary work, and half of all artist royalties go to the Dublin Simon Community, which supports people experiencing homelessness.

The guest list is remarkable. Bruce Springsteen opens with A Rainy Night In Soho, one of MacGowan's most tender love songs, and Hozier takes on the much-loved Fairytale Of New York. Tom Waits, a kindred spirit if ever there was one, turns to Summer In Siam, and U2 tackle Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.

The Pogues themselves also appear, while Primal Scream, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Steve Earle, Glen Hansard and Dropkick Murphys show just how far his influence spread across punk, folk and rock, from Dublin pubs to American arenas.

Raucous in places and achingly tender in others, it is a fitting send-off for a writer who made beauty out of chaos, night after night.
