UGK's Ridin Dirty is the Southern rap blueprint that Port Arthur, Texas, handed to the world, spread across a double LP with plenty of room to lean back.

By 1996 Pimp C and Bun B had built their following the hard way, with little help from radio or the coastal rap press. Ridin Dirty arrived without a big crossover single and still spread on sheer reputation, passed from car stereo to car stereo until it became the record countless Southern rappers would later cite as scripture.

Pimp C handled much of the production himself, and his love of live bass, organ and slow, gliding grooves gives the album its humid, unhurried feel. One Day turns grief and loss into one of the most affecting songs in the duo's catalogue, Murder lets Bun B unleash a verse still quoted with reverence, and Pinky Ring and Diamonds & Wood glide along with candy-paint swagger. The spoken Intro and Outro frame it all with a streetwise, documentary edge.

Decades later it still sounds like a hot Texas night with the windows down, soulful and dangerous in the same breath. For anyone tracing the roots of Houston and the wider Southern sound, this is where the map begins, and the double vinyl gives every low end its full weight.
