Fifty years after forming in Dublin, U2 mark the milestone with Carnaval De Luz, presented here as a limited deluxe box of three 180-gram LPs.

This is the band's 16th studio album and their first full set of new material in nine years, and it arrives with plenty to say. The songs circle big, unguarded subjects, from spirituality and friendship to freedom and the plain stubbornness it takes to keep going. The box widens the picture further, pairing the twelve-track album with the Days of Ash and Easter Lily EPs, two six-song companions written during the same creative burst.

Guests add some unexpected colour. Rosalía joins the band on The Mirror Maker, and Silencio, the first song shared from the album, set the stage for its arrival. The closer, Torn, is a country-tinged duet between Bono and Dolly Parton about the cracks that can run through a family, co-written with Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid.

Daniel Lanois plays pedal steel on that final track, a quiet link back to the producer who helped shape some of the band's most celebrated records. It gives the album's final moments a rootsy, wide-open shimmer.
