Two Door Cinema Club returned from a long silence with Gameshow, a 2016 album that trades their wiry indie-pop rush for glam and disco-tinged swagger, spread here across two LPs.
After years of nonstop touring behind Tourist History and Beacon, the Northern Irish trio of Alex Trimble, Sam Halliday and Kevin Baird stepped away for a while. When they regrouped, they set up at The Garage in Topanga, California, with producer Jacknife Lee, and came back with their most adventurous record yet, laced with wry commentary on modern life and the strange pressures of success.
Opener "Are We Ready? (Wreck)" sets the tone with a stomping groove and a chorus that questions the world around it. "Bad Decisions" struts with the falsetto glide of a late-1970s dance-floor single, while the title track "Gameshow" pairs nervy guitar with a sly, bouncing rhythm. "Lavender" brings one of the album's sweetest hooks, a bright counterweight to the darker lyrics.
Lee's production gives everything a glossy, slightly artificial sheen that suits the album's themes of fame, image and distraction, and it rewards turning up loud.
For fans who loved the band's early sound, it is a bold left turn, and proof that time away can sharpen a band's sense of purpose.
