Few horn sections have hit as hard as Tower of Power's, and Back to Oakland, their 1974 funk high point, returns as a limited 180-gram audiophile pressing in the Rhino Reserve series.
By the mid seventies the East Bay outfit had become a finely tuned machine, built around a punchy, precise horn section and one of the tightest rhythm sections in the business. With Lenny Williams on lead vocals, this album found them at the peak of their powers, toggling effortlessly between sweaty, syncopated workouts and lush, slow-burning soul. It is a love letter to their hometown, and it sounds like it was made with a grin.
"Oakland Stroke" bookends the record, a coiled, jittery groove that shows off the band's rhythmic sorcery in a matter of minutes. "Squib Cakes" is an instrumental showcase built on bubbling organ and pinpoint horns, the kind of track musicians study for years. "Don't Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream)" brings a buoyant, radio-ready hook, while "Time Will Tell" slows things down into a tender, beautifully arranged ballad.
For funk and soul lovers, this is a cornerstone of the Bay Area sound, and an audiophile pressing is a fitting home for every horn stab and bass pop.
