Too $hort's Life Is...Too $hort carried Oakland's street-level swagger to a national audience in 1989, a slow-rolling, bass-heavy album that helped define West Coast rap. This pressing comes on 150 gram vinyl.
Todd Shaw had spent years selling homemade tapes around the Bay Area, building a fan base one hand-to-hand sale at a time, and this was his big commercial breakthrough. The record went double platinum and brought his laid-back drawl, raw humor and unfiltered street tales to listeners far beyond California. Produced by Too $hort with Al Eaton and others, it pairs booming drum machines with deep, funky basslines that roll along at their own unhurried pace.
The title track sets the tone with a confident, conversational flow, while "I Ain't Trippin'" stretches out over a hypnotic, low-slung groove. "Oakland" is a proud salute to his hometown, and "CussWords" showcases the gleefully profane wit that made him a cult hero long before the mainstream caught on.
More than three decades on, it remains a cornerstone of Bay Area hip-hop and a blueprint for the storytelling style that countless rappers would borrow. Crank it up, settle in for the long, loping grooves and let those big, rubbery basslines do all the talking.
