La Nuit Sauvage is Tonnerre's debut, and it plays like a bonfire story passed down from Quebec's own 1970s hard rock underground.
Tonnerre take their name seriously, thunder, and their sound sits right where you'd expect a rural Quebec band to land raised on both sides of the record collection, Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult and AC/DC on one shelf, Offenbach and Aut'chose and Corbeau on the other. That second shelf matters, because Quebec's 1970s hard rock underground was never just riffs, it was poetry sung in French over amplifiers turned all the way up, and La Nuit Sauvage picks that thread back up rather than just borrowing the leather jackets. Released in 2024 as the band's debut, it arrives sounding less like a retro exercise and more like a scene picking itself back up.
The album plays out as one long night in the woods, dusk to dawn, and the title track sets it moving with a riff built to be shouted back at a festival crowd. Le Grand Corbeau turns a crow into an omen you can bang your head to, L'Esprit de la Forêt slows into something genuinely eerie, and L'Aurore closes the record out as the sun actually seems to rise, major key and hard won.
That's a rare thing for a debut to pull off.
