Tom Roberts' score for Nosferatu trades cheap scares for the lyricism of Schumann and Schubert, and arrives on oxblood red 180g vinyl, a colour the Count would approve of.
Roberts is a pianist with an unusually varied past, having toured with Leon Redbone, played with Vince Giordano's Nighthawks, appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and arranged music for Martin Scorsese's The Aviator. When he fell for Murnau's 1922 vampire classic, he felt it deserved something more nuanced than the usual spooky soundtrack, and wrote a new score for the film's centenary, premiering it in Pittsburgh in 2022.
The result draws on German Romanticism and traditional Romanian music, a melodic fantasy of love and loss with a gothic shadow, rather than silent movie pastiche. Bucolic Teutonic sets the pastoral scene before the horror arrives, The Werewolf Prowls Tonight lets the menace creep in through the keys, and The Martyr Frau Ellen carries the heartbreak at the story's centre.
Seventeen tracks and forty minutes of piano-led melody that works with the film or entirely without it. Murnau's vampire has had a hundred years of scores thrown at him, and few of them care this much about tenderness. A gorgeous companion for a late-night viewing, or simply a dark evening alone with a candle and a record player.
