Before the hits, there were the hungry years, and No Sleep Til L.A. opens that vault on a single 180-gram LP of rare and unheard Tom Petty recordings from the 1970s.

The twelve tracks trace the road from Mudcrutch, Petty's Gainesville band, to the birth of the Heartbreakers. Seven are previously unreleased and five are rarities, all newly mixed from the original multitrack tapes by Ryan Ulyate in 2026. The album also sits at the heart of the Origins 1971-1978 box set, and here it stands on its own.

"Parade of Loons" is the headline discovery, a previously unheard Heartbreakers song from 1978 with the wiry energy of a band that knew it was onto something. "Sin City" is another unreleased Heartbreakers cut. Collectors will also find fresh mixes of "Depot Street" and "Wild Eyes," the two sides of Mudcrutch's 1975 single.

What comes through is a songwriter finding his voice in real time: chiming guitars, a hint of Southern snarl and melodies that would soon fill American radio.

For anyone who thought the story started with the 1976 debut, this is the missing prologue, and a reminder that Petty was writing keepers long before the rest of the world was listening.
