Origins 1971-1978 tells the story of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers before the arenas and the hits, across a limited, deluxe 180-gram 5LP box with DVD and Blu-ray.

Marking the band's 50th anniversary, the set opens with No Sleep Til L.A., a rarities album tracing the road from the earliest Mudcrutch recordings, through sessions in Miami and Tulsa, to Los Angeles, with seven of its twelve tracks previously unreleased. The Cut Out Bin finds Petty working solo with session players, Leon Russell among them, before he settled on the Heartbreakers.

At the heart of the box sit the first two albums, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and You're Gonna Get It!, newly mixed by Ryan Ulyate from the original multitrack tapes, with extended versions of "American Girl" and "Breakdown". Live From The Record Plant 1977 captures a full radio broadcast from Sausalito, all swagger, while the unheard "Parade Of Loons" shows how much strong material sat in the vault.

The DVD holds the band's 1978 Old Grey Whistle Test appearance, the Blu-ray carries all 51 songs in hi-res stereo, Atmos and 5.1, and an 88-page fanzine adds notes from David Fricke and Bud Scoppa.

For anyone who wore out those early records, this is the origin story told properly.
